'In A Gold Rush, Get Into The Shovel Business' Why I'm...

The bulk of my experience primarily comes from a software background, working on medium to large scale projects with a mobile component as well as large-scale data intensive platforms. My formal experience within the “IoT” space is mostly involved with projects tracking data from a large number of connected devices. Coincidentally, I see this quite commonly throughout the industry - besides well designed, innovative hardware, which is of course important, the most interesting market opportunities have to do with managing and deriving insight from the data produced by fleets of devices. This includes efforts to apply machine learning and artificial intelligence either in the edge (the holy grail) or the cloud to that data.

Of course, to get that data and derive value from it, a number of factors must be true. For instance, device connectivity must be managed to balance security needs with data reporting capabilities, and the components of the path through which the data flows must be managed, monitored, and configured correctly, as well as be up to date with the latest software or firmware.

I recall a phrase from back in the mobile app gold rush days that was thrown around quite a bit: “In a gold rush, get into the shovel business”. While I may be paraphrasing, that’s what’s exciting about where EdgeIQ is positioned in the industry. We’re not in the hardware business, nor yet diving head-first into the ML/AI problem first, but instead providing a solution to that fundamental, buzzword-lacking, yet essential piece of the data pipeline from connected device to insight. Device Lifecycle Management, from provisioning to configuration, monitoring and updating - our goal is to make it easy to manage and solve problems in the path between your devices and your, or your customer’s, cloud or enterprise system.

It’s exhilarating to be joining a company that's building a solution to this part of the IoT data value chain, because these fundamentals must be addressed in a number of different industries before any further promises of the IoT revolution can come to fruition.
